Stained Glass: First Presbyterian (1 of 2)

The First Presbyterian Church is an old building, built over a century ago in 1896. Therefore I was very surprised to learn that the stained-glass windows in the building were quite recent. Apparently the original windows were mostly amber, as a few still are.

In the back of the church an informational tablet tells the story of the windows. The first was a window from the Mulberry Presbyterian Church (from Germany in 1846) given to the church by William and Crestal Woodworth in 1988. I think it was the one on the left shown below. The other two are examples of what most or all of the original windows looked like.

Bill Woodworth made most of the stained-glass windows in the church. Some of his early examples hang in the narthex. (Did you have to look up that word? I did.)

 

In 1992 and 1993 he designed and made three windows on the north side of the sanctuary to replace windows that had deteriorated substantially. That would be these windows, I think.

 

 

 In 1994 he and some others did the windows on the south side of the sanctuary.

In 1997 four stained-glass windows in the small chapel were created and installed.

But the most impressive windows are the four large rose windows. They will be the subject of another post.
