As I have been looking at conifers (if you missed it, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here), I have noticed a funny formation on some of them. At first I did not pay much attention, but when I saw a lot of them on the spruce at the north part of the Saint Joseph's College campus, and when I noticed that they were on pine trees as well, I decided they must be some kind of pest.
Below are two more of them. As I had been reading about the various conifers, I had stumbled on a number of discussions of bag worms, so I thought I should check to see if that is what they were. Yup. That is what they are.
Here is a bald cypress tree just north of the Monnett school that has quite a few bagworms. Maybe the students there could pick some of them, put them in a jar, and see if anything emerges. It would combine a science project with pest eradication.
Do you know how to treat bagworms? You just helped me identify an odd formation on my Japanese maple...
