This is theater week in Rensselaer, with both Rensselaer Central High School and Saint Joseph's College hosting plays. At SJC the play is The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a musical comedy. Below contestant Leif Coneybear is singing about his life before he spells his word. In the background are other contestants, including some who were picked from the people who were attending the play. I was asked but said no--I know my limits. If you go tonight, you might get to be in the play.
In addition to the contestants, the officials of the spelling bee had substantial roles. They were excellently cast. Unlike the high school play, this one had a simple set.
With a musical there has to be some choreography, and this number was one of the dance routines. By this time the members of the audience who had been given roles had been eliminated. The pink pants were the most expensive costume in the play.
Even though the music was not all that memorable, it was a very enjoyable play. The cast did an excellent job with both singing and acting and there was plenty of humor along the way. It is well worth the $5 admission. If you have the time tonight (Saturday) the performance is at 8:00 in the college auditorium.
The voices were strong and lyrical. The singing is what I enjoyed the most.
