How the Demotte library began

The DeMotte branch of the Jasper County Public Library is today a large building (with an inconvenient parking lot.) But I had read that when the library moved to its current location, it was much smaller. It took over the building that had been St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. So when I was in DeMotte recently, I asked a librarian what part of the building was the original, church part of the building. She did not know and asked another librarian for help.
 The second librarian knew the history of the building and told me that the northern part of the building, which now houses two meeting rooms, was once the entire library. I has been remodeled so that it blends in with the newer part of the building, but if you look closely, you can see that it does not quite match.

The church was built on the top of a slope, and that slope was steepened when the new addition was added. St. Cecilia relocated several blocks to the south.
