Cardinal flower
I was surprised the other day to stumble on a lone cardinal flower west if town. Its last buds were blooming, so it will be be unnoticeable in a week or so.
This plant is a close relative of Great Lobelia, and can hybridize with it. The notes on the Illinois wildflower page says that these hybrids are sometimes sold in garden shops.
